Speakers

Clive de Bruyn has been a beekeeper since the 1960's. He is one of the best known and respected beekeeping authorities in Britain and Ireland. Based in Essex where he runs over 100 colonies for queen-rearing, honey production and pollination. He is a prominent member of the Bee Famers Association where he has been the Education Officer since 1982 . Clive has studied, worked and presented papers within an international forum for many years and done much work in third world countries. In addition, he has written several books including the indispensable*Practical Beeping'.

Dr Peter Kennedy is a Research Fellow in Prof. Juliet Osborne’s team at the Environment and Sustainability Institute, at the University of Exeter’s Cornwall campus, and has been studying Asian hornets since shortly after they arrived on the British mainland. Initially exploring techniques to improve efficiency in locating nests, he and colleagues are now focusing on understanding the breadth of Asian hornet interactions with native insect fauna and how this influences local ecosystem services, in partnership with colleagues in Jersey, France and Spain.

Ben Woodcock is an ecologist who has been working in agricultural systems trying to increase their biodiversity value for 20 years. This has included work developing agri-environmental schemes such as those used to established flower rich field margins and grassland restoration. His more recent work has focused on the role of insect pollinators, both wild and domesticated, looking at their role in supporting crop production as well as their sensitivity to our changing environment, with a particular focus on land use change and pesticide use.

Presentation of Essex Honey Show trophies and exam certificates and raffle, followed by the President's Speech.
